Century English Carved Oak Chest Cabinet Gothic Revival Monkey Owl Violin. Direct from London, England, a very important carved chest with hand carved details that are some of the very best from the 19. The cabinet's distinguished provenance is evident with the superb level of carvings as well as original maker's tags. Carvings begin at the top frieze and continue to the base of the cabinet; at the top, ornately carved mask, flanked by outward facing birds with lavish carved foliate and carved serpent faces at each corner.

The center bank has four drawers, with each drawer fully carved across the front, having very large, dual dimensional carved masks, with open mouths that provide drawer pulls underneath. The hand carvings that flank the bank of drawers are equally elaborate: carved birds to the top, both nesting and in flight, amidst and above Black Forest carved foliage and fruits, grapes, acorns. Below the fruits, the left side features a carved owl sitting on a carved plinth (note the details to the owl's face and feathers); the right side, a carved squirrel eating an acorn on a matching carved plinth. Interior drawer has original maker's tags, "Hewetsons, Tottenham Court Road, London". Note: For most of the 19. Century, Tottenham Court Road in London, was the world renown hub for bespoke, hand-crafted furniture, just as Savile Row was for tailored clothing. Hand dovetailed drawers with original brass locks, fully stamped "Hobbs & Co London". Quality throughout, well built by craftsmen and master carvers of the period. X 33.5" x 21". Upper two drawer interiors, 9 ht.
