C1801 REGIMENTAL Silver MESS Table Spoon By John TOLEKEN Irish Provincial CORK. John Toleken and cork Sterling Silver mark. This is a real piece of European history.

What is especially interesting about it, not only is it a rare piece of provincial Irish silver, but engraving on the terminal is for the 1st Light Battalion of the King's Dutch Brigade. This unit was paid by the British from 1799 to 1802 assembled from former dutch states soldiers under the command of Willem of Orange-Nassau, the future king of the Netherlands. In anticipation of trouble that might follow from the unification of Ireland and Britain which came into effect January 1801, the 1st Light Battalion was sent to cork. It turned out that their presence in Ireland wasn't in the end required and they left June 1801.

They were moved to Jersey as a British defence force against the French Republic trying to land there. This spoon is marked Mess in script using the long s (looks a bit like an f) followed by a short s, as was typical of the time. So it seems that the officers bought and had engraved a set of spoons for the officers mess for the 1st Light Battalion stationed in cork between January and June 1801, of which this is a surviving piece! There is an excellent document about the British Dutch Brigade you can find online if you want to learn further details look for "Officers and Organisation of the Dutch Brigade". 8.9 (225mm) in length and weighs approx 2.25 troy oz (70 grams).

Good condition, may have small marks and scratches, signs of wear & use commensurate with age. Has a small shallow minor crease in the bowl. There are 2 marks on the spoon. Makers' Mark for John TOLEKEN. Sterling mark common on provincial Irish silver.
