Antique 4/4 violin, Stradivarius copy, project for luthier, #1330. For sale is a full sized Stradivarius copy violin.

Some are for restoration while others are playable as is. As the descriptions and photos indicate, some will require extensive repair; others need little or no more than set-up; and the rest lie somewhere in between. Workmanship on this violin is good.

The violin is labeled Antonius Straviuarius Cremonensis / Faciebat Anno 1777, with the AS logo in a circle and the "77" inked in. It is, or rather was, a good quality European shop violin likely made sometime between 1895 and 1920.

The overall length of the violin is 23 1/8. The two-piece maple bookmatched maple back is of of narrow curl and measures 14 1/16" long, 8 1/4" across at the lower bout, and 6 1/2 across at the upper bout.

The one-piece spruce top is narrow-grained. Blocked in all four corners and fully lined. Fingerboard and neck joint are solid. Violin has had some repairs before it came to me, but it needs many more and would be a project for the serious beginning luthier.

The low price reflects its condition and also its potential. Peg box has a hairline crack on the treble side of the A-string peghole.

The back was reglued but should be taken apart and reglued properly. The top is off for repairs and does fit back properly. The top has two cracks that need further repair.

One extends downward from the treble f-hole near the soundpost area, and the other extends upward on the treble side from the saddle cut to just below the soundpost area. Both were glued but not tabbed.

Pics show these cracks from the top side and interior side. Violin was partially refinished in an amateur way (see pics), then part of the finish was removed. Nut will need work or replacement; a new saddle and soundpost will be needed, as well as fittings and setup after repairs. Possibly more repairs than I've noted.
