Vintage Modern Bronze Young Man Boy Mozart Violin Karl Wollek Art Deco Antique

This delightful early 1900s lost wax casting measures 9 ¾" tall x 5 3/8" wide x 2 5/8 deep and depicts a young man in button up 18th c. Frock coat and square toe buckle shoes totally engrossed in his playing.

The boy's pleasure in his instrument is evident in his facial expression and the posture of the player lends unusual grace to the composition. It is signed on the base Wollek 1932. This life-time reduction of his famous 1926 commission for the Mozart Plats in St. Gilgen (the birthplace of Mozart's mother) is dated 1932 and VERY hard to find. Wollek studied at the Munich Academy under Eberle and began sculpting in the neo-baroque manner.

His style became increasingly simplified going through the art nouveau currents and eventually settling on the effect we see in this small work: fluid lines with blurred details and softened contours. This work has an appealing golden bronze surface with areas of soft brown patina.

You will note old paint spatters and there is a dark streak on his back from? The fragile bow (applied with a delicate silver solder joint after the casting) is bent but intact.
